Hushpower to the Rescue!
Jay Leno's 1901 Fairbanks Morse

We all know Jay Leno is a big car guy, but his interests go far beyond four wheel over-the-road traversing vehicles. Case in point, take a look at Jay's 1901 Fairbanks Morse, a 15 horsepower stationary engine weighing in at a stout 9,000 pounds! But aside from the obvious weight problem, noise and soot were two problems that challenged the mechanics at Jay Leno's "Big Dog" Garage.

According to Leno's website, www.jaylenosgarage.com, Fairbanks Morse was the first company to successfully market a gasoline-powered engine in the United States. This particular example was found in the California desert, where it was used to transport miners into and out a gold mine. Leno estimates that the engine had been sitting idle for over 80 years, but the dry California climate had been kind, the biggest chore in making this "hit or miss" engine run being how to transport it back to Big Dog Garage.

Once it was operational, the biggest obstacle was the fact that the single cylinder engine was too loud to run inside the Big Dog Garage. In addition, the vertical exhaust pipe was kicking out a significant amount of soot which was blackening the ceiling above the engine. No problem for Flowmaster as Bernard Juchli installed a Hushpower HP2 muffler that Jay identifies in the video you can watch here.

The final word: the Big Dog Garage artisans brought their century-old engine to life with help from a 21st century product from Flowmaster. Find a Flowmaster Authorized Dealer near you and fit your application, or Fairbanks Morse engine.
